Research into Trailer

In order to understand a trailer that is based on our genre- Documentary trailer. We decided to look at different trailers using different sources. We went on youtube to check the trailers and write about the information that we have found related to our genre and create a brain storm on it:

Billing Block

Billing Block of 'Slender'

We compared different billing blocks of each genre to check what stayed the same even if the genre was different we had realised that the institution and association was there because they are the creator of the movie for example; the institution is Loken Entertainment in association with Cousin media. The following information is the title put into quotation and 'Film' this lets us know that the Billing block is to do with the chosen film. Titles and names are the added to the billing block, if Lauren had done costume design then it would come up as costume design LAUREN BUTLER. There are then logos at the end and a COMING SOON in big font which shows us that this trailer is the type of trailer that the movie hasn't come up and right at the bottom is a website for the movie so if someone checks out the billing block at the end of the trailer and want to find out more information about it then they can visit the website at the bottom. The billing block can be longer but it will be the same layout.

Length

Length of Paranormal Activity

A typical length of a trailer can range up from 1 minute 50 seconds to 2 minutes. However teaser trailers are much more shorter because it does not show long cuts of the movie but quick cuts of different scenes of the movie. The length of the trailer depends on what type of trailer we will do, a theatrical or feature trailer will be longer in order to show our target audience the narrative clearly and create the tension of a trailer. There are also time for the institution and the production during the beginning of the trailer and then during the end of the trailer there is a billing block, the billing block is longer so the target market can read it, the billing block often lasts up to 30-40 seconds and a green screen rating card will last for another 50 second.  However when we were looking at the 'Catfish' Documentary or the 'Blair Witch Project' a thriller documentary, it had lasted up to 2 minutes because there were a lot of scenes to show in order to keep the target audience interested in the movie.

Titles

Title font from 'Paranormal Activity' trailer

The colour of the title often represents what the genre is, for example; this is the title shown at the end of the Paranormal activity trailer. As you can see the title if Red, this is a contrast from the black that is the background. However the colour evokes a mystery side or a dark mood which matches the genre of the movie. It would have not worked well if the colour of the title had been blue or yellow as often those colours are associated with happy bright feelings. The text does not look like a thriller/ horror font which you will find in most trailers however the effect of the trailer a fuzzy camera effect shows that it is a documentary.

Genres

As a group, Lauren, Ashleigh and I researched into different genres for our trailers using different methods such as watching trailers on YouTube or traileraddict.com or reading blogs and reviews of how different audiences thought of the trailer which gave us an insight of the peoples review. This allows us to have an idea of the types of genres that we could do for our trailer.

The Ugly Truth - Romantic Comedy Trailer

This is a romantic- comedy based in New York Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler who play two opposite characters in a movie about finding love and being different. The trailer was interesting in different ways. Right from the beginning of the trailer we are introduced by our protagonist Katherine who is shown as a busy working business woman with quick cuts of her showing her different work with her voice playing over the different scenes "There are no problems, only solutions." Who is then introduced to the male protagonist in it, the reckless funny presenter Gerard. After showing the different interventions there is a long cut of them having a funny flirty conversation which shows the romantic comedy side of the movie. There are then fade to white cuts with titles of the characters and reviews from other magazines and newspapers to show the positive comments of the movie. It then changes to big quick cuts of how the two opposite characters work together to get the boy of her dreams but realises that the boy of her dreams might be right in front of her.

Bad Grandpa- Comedy Trailer
Bad Grandpa, a movie created by Jackass, is a comedic movie about a grandfather and grandson going on a road trip and creating havoc everywhere they go on innocent civilians and their events. However this is different from other trailers after the green screen the shots are much more longer than the shot cut ones that you often see. There are not titles in the beginning and the sound is often the dialogue of the son and the grandpa in the movie talking to each other or creating the plans. All the scene will make the target audience laugh which would not be recommended for children because it often has swear words or scenes that is too rude for it to be shown however it does show scenes that will attract the audience that it is recommended for. During the end of the trailer it starts getting quicker and funnier with the title of the movie showing at the end with a song that matches the scene of the kid dressing up as a stripper for a beauty pageant and the reaction of the audience when it goes silent. There is always sound during this trailer a contrast to an horror or thriller trailer.
Fast and Furious - Action Trailer
During the beginning of this trailer it is slow with slow shortcuts and the dialogue slow and quite this creates a mellow feeling for the audience until the real action happens for the audience to make them jump. There are close up of all the actors that star in the movie and scenes of what the story will be like and allows us to understand the story line of the movie. There are various quick cuts and short cuts which allows us to understand what is happening while creating the effect of the action that will happen in the movie. The title shows in red, and red is often associated with action or horror depending on the text font that they use for the movie. The names of the important actors that are starring in the movie are shown as it allows the target audience know if the actor is good enough or if they love the actor then they will want to come to watch the movie because their favourite actors will be in it.
Paranormal Activity - Thriller Trailer

Paranormal activity is thriller movie with scenes that will make the viewer jumpy and scared because of the loud sounds and quick cuts of the scenes. However for this trailer, the movie makers had decided to allow us to see the reaction of the movie from their perspective. Thus allowing us to get excited about the reactions that we would have, as the audience and target market, if were to see this. Often the trailer consisted of close up to those who reacted fiercely this make us, the audience of the trailer, to want to see it. Often the noises would be louder in movies this allows the audience to be shocked from the following silence, which is unexpected most of the time. For this movie, created on low budget, it has been significantly popular due to the setting, narrative and the target audience that it has been made for. Created as a documentary, we grow a connection towards the main characters through their journey of finding Katie's and Micah's investigation to find the paranormal presence in the house. The trailer includes quick cuts, scenes and when the releasing of the movie will come out. The trailer overall is powerful and successful to draw their target audience.

Dorothy Mills- Psychological Thriller

Dorothy Mills is a Psychological Thriller, set in rural Ireland, a psychiatrist goes out from her home London to Ireland in aid for a girl with Paranoia Schizophrenia.  The beginning shows the psychiatrist explaining her reason of going, the trailer essentially shows from the presence to the past from when her journey began, allowing us to see the difference the boat ride scene into Ireland is black and white representing the Psychiatrists narrative to why she went in the beginning. The narrative and the voice over of the priest immediately allows the audience to understand the religious and location of where the movie is set, due to the accent. The close up of the characters within the trailer allows us to see their emotions and their presence within the movie, allowing the audience to understand the vibe that is given towards it. The music is slow and peaceful at the start but only until the close up of Dorothy when the sound scratches and becomes eerie. There are then quick cuts of the scene with the dialogue until the releasing of the movie and billing block is shown.
